Where Texas ranks in early 2021 in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25

As it happens every year, the excitement surrounding Texas’ football program is soaring.

Most of the high expectations in this off-season revolve around newly hired coach Steve Sarkisian and his impressive tree of assistant coaches. They are not only some of the best coaches in the entire college football scene, but also excellent recruiters.

Sarkisian is an experienced offensive mind that should open up to the Longhorns’ attack. Running back Bijan Robinson is likely to become a candidate for Heisman in 2021, while Joshua Moore must be ecstatic after witnessing what Sarkisian was able to do with Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith.

Before Sarkisian puts Texas in a position to compete in the College Football Playoff, the Longhorns will need to secure a major 12 title – something they were unable to do with former coach Tom Herman.

In the USA TODAY Sports college football rankings too early for the 2021 season, two other Big 12 programs were listed ahead of Texas. The Longhorns reached the 20th overall position.

The departure of Tom Herman and the arrival of Steve Sarkisian will provide an interesting cultural change in Austin. Sam Ehlinger also leaves, leaving a huge hole in the quarterback. Casey Thompson, who starred in the Alamo Bowl, and the Hudson Card have the first chance to be the starter in an attack that should have been more aggressive on the field. Running back Bijan Robinson must be a star if the offensive line provides enough holes and he gets enough loads. There are defense pieces to be built if someone can put them together.

Another 12 major teams in the ranking:

Oklahoma Sooners – No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones – No. 6 Oklahoma State Cowboys – No. 23
