Wheel falls out of plane landing at O’Hare Airport, landing with boom in Chicago’s family yard

The steering wheel of a small plane bound for O’Hare International Airport decided to make an unscheduled stop in a Chicago family’s yard on Thursday.

Fortunately, the steering wheel – which was previously attached to a single-engine aircraft that operated Boutique Air Flight 835 – did not injure residents of the Jefferson Park neighborhood, where it fell shortly after 6 pm.

The Boutique Air flight landed “without incident” in O’Hare at approximately 6:40 pm, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) representative confirmed to Fox News. All seven people on board were not injured.

The aircraft, however, sent a “considerable amount of sparks” flying over runway 28C upon landing, according to a statement from the Chicago Aviation Department.

Shona Grant discovered the wheel in her backyard, along with other wreckage from the plane’s landing gear, reported the Chicago Tribune. The owner of the house told the outlet that she and her husband were walking at the time of the incident, while their four children were at home.

Grant added that she initially thought the tire was just garbage that had been dumped outside her home, and moved it to the back alley to be collected. Only later, after consulting with a family friend who worked with airplanes, did she deduce that it was an airplane tire.

“I would have climbed the roof if I had reached the roof,” she told the channel.

Neighbors who spoke to Fox 32 said they heard the wheel hit the ground shortly after 6 pm.

“There was a big bang. I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know if it was at my house. I checked the basement, ”said one resident.
