What’s new (and coming out) from Netflix in March 2021

In the absence of new films and TV series that are widely attractive (not Oscar Aspirants this month, unfortunately), Netflix seems to be looking to the podcast market to figure out how to keep its huge subscriber base happy. His new offerings in March include a series of documentaries and specials that I would totally listen to, were they podcasts. I will watch? We will, I will not. (I did not even see Ted Lasso yet.) But you can.

Operation: Varsity Blues (March 17) is sure to attract eyes, fascinated as we all were by the college admission scandal that brought down cultural titans like Felicity Huffman, Aunt Becky’s Full house, and the fashion tycoon who once designed a paper towel rack that I bought at Target. Everyone is still upset about the way they had already manipulated a system already considered in their favor to place their children in “good” colleges, and with a good cause. The documentary comes from some members of the same team that produced pandemic feeling Tiger King.

Murder among Mormons (March 3) is the kind of slightly exploitative true crime story that already seems to be a podcast that you signed up for last year, but forgot to listen to. He investigates a series of bombings that terrorized Salt Lake City in the mid-1980s.

And an inspiring story of perseverance in Hoop Dreams mold, Last chance U: basketball (March 10) is a spinoff of the long Netflix series Last chance U. Mute the focus of football for college basketball players who have struggled in their lives and studies and must play at the junior college level if they wish to return to playing in the Division.

If you prefer a little more fiction in your TV watching diet, I’m personally excited to see how well the Pacific Rim series of films translates into anime in Pacific Rim: The Black, launching March 4 (giant robots in anime? Can it work!) The Irregulars (March 26) has great Buffy / Sabrina potential: a series about young paranormal crime fighters based on the famous “Baker Street Irregulars” by Sherlock Holmes. And then there’s Moxie (March 3), a dramatic comedy about a girl who launches a zine to expose sexism in her high school, which sounds culturally relevant and is also the debut in the direction of an Amy Poehler.

Here’s everything else going in and out of Netflix in March 2021.
