Netflix’s marketing department is excited to inform you that the streaming service will be debuting at least one new film every week in 2021. This is perhaps an attempt to distract from the fact that while Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc., all have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), Netflix’s list of non-original content is getting narrower every month.
So, if it isn’t the recent box office hits that draw you in, what will you gain from your subscription money in February? The biggest gain of the month is Malcom and Mariand (February 5), an eventful film starring Zendaya (who just won the Emmy for Best Actress for HBO Euphoria) and John David Washington and written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix paid over $ 30 million for the film after triggering a bidding war following its (virtual) debut at the Toronto Film Festival in 2020. Netflix expects the small-scale story about two actors who came home after their film’s debut to wait for the criticism warnings attract the attention of notoriously self-centered industry award voters.
If you are not in the mood to look at the black and white solipsist navel, there are All boys: always and forever (February 12), the third entry in the epic YA rom-with trilogy that started with For all the boys I’ve loved before. The following week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest face off in the brilliant elder abuse thriller I care a lot (February 19), marking the first time someone did an elderly abuse thriller.
Here’s everything else arriving (and leaving) from Netflix in February 2021.
