What we know about shooting victims in Boulder, Colorado

Police identified the 10 victims who died after a sniper fired at a crowded supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. Victims included a 51-year-old man policeman who responded to the attack scene.

The 21-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Monday and was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. Police said the suspect was shot and hospitalized in stable condition.

President Joe Biden extended condolences to the victims’ families. “Ten lives have been lost and more families have been destroyed by armed violence in the state of Colorado,” he said on Tuesday.

Here’s what we know about the victims of the mass shooting:

Eric Talley51

Talley, an 11-year-old veteran of the Boulder Police Department, ran to the shooting site at the supermarket, where he was shot dead.

Talley was the father of seven children and loved his community, Boulder’s chief of police, Maris Herold, told a news conference. Herold called his efforts at the shooting “heroic” and said, “he is all that policing deserves and needs.”

Her sister, Kirstin, remembered her brother in Twitter: “My heart is broken. I can’t explain how handsome he was and what a devastating loss it is for so many. Fly high, my sweet brother. You always wanted to be a pilot (bloody color blindness). Fly high.”

Rikki Olds, 25

Olds, who worked as a manager at the King Soopers grocery store, was remembered by his family as a loving and hardworking person who was “truly unique”. Her uncle Robert released a statement on Tuesday, saying that “no one could replace the happiness” that she brought to her family.

“Our family is suffering a big loss and we are going to get through this together one day at a time,” he said in a statement. “On behalf of our family, thank you for honoring Rikki’s legacy and the light she has been in this world. Our hearts are with the families of the other victims who are going through the same pain as us.”

Olds was dedicated to her career, Robert said, and she “strove to be the best manager she could be for her working family”.

Kevin Mahoney61

Mahoney’s daughter Erika lamented her father on Twitter, saying he “represented all things in love”.

“I am very grateful that he accompanied me to the altar last summer,” she wrote on Tuesday. “I’m pregnant now. I know he wants me to be strong for his granddaughter. I love you forever, Dad. You are always with me.”

Lynn Murray62

Murray, a retired mother of two and an Instacart employee, was working when she was killed in the supermarket. The company’s founder and CEO, Apoorva Mehta, sent condolences to Murray’s family.

“Violence of any kind has no place in our society, and our teams are working with law enforcement officials and King Soopers’ staff to help in any way we can,” said Mehta. “We contacted the buyer’s family to offer our support and resources during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Denny Stong, 20

Stong was paying for lunch when the shooting started, his friend Dean Schiller told CBS News. Schiller was broadcasting live from inside the supermarket and did not know that his friend would be among the victims.

“He was a very smart boy,” said Schiller. “He was trying to be an airline pilot who wanted to be a commercial pilot – that was his dream.”

Teri Leiker51

Leiker worked at the King Soopers grocery store for 31 years before his death.

Tralona Bartkowiak, 49

Bartkowiak moved to Colorado more than a decade ago to run his family’s business. Her friends and family remembered her as a talented artist who always had a smile on her face.

“Every time you saw her, she had a smile on her face,” his cousin David told CBS Los Angeles. “I don’t think I ever saw her angry.”

David said she grew up with him in Southern California, where she helped raise him. “It is very sad that she is gone,” said David. “It’s unbelievable. She had the biggest heart. She is the most loving person I have ever met in my life, and it is so devastating.”

After learning that her car was parked at the scene of the shooting, he watched hours of news coverage for updates on his cousin.

He later found out about her death by Bartkowiak’s mother. But that night, David received a call from his mother, who told him about his death. “She was the backbone of this family,” he said. “She is the backbone of this company.”

Jody Waters, 65

Waters, a former resident of Boulder, worked in a clothing boutique at Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, the Denver Post reported.

“Jody was a beautiful soul with a warm and loving heart, mother and grandmother, and she will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. We are so sad ”, wrote his former colleagues in a Facebook post.
