What to do if you are unable to make calls to Android Auto

Earlier this year, a bug interrupted Google Assistant calls on Android Auto after users upgraded to Android 11. Google fixed the problem shortly afterwards with a system update, but the bug still appears for some users, even after installing the patch. Fortunately, it seems that there is finally a solution. According to a post on Google support forums, the problem is caused by incorrectly configured app permissions, at least for some users.

Fixing the persistent Android Auto phone call bug is easy, but first you must confirm that you are using the latest version of Android and Android Auto, just in case. On your phone, go to Settings> System> Advanced> System update. Touch “Check for updates” then, run the installation if a patch is available. Then, check for a new version of Android Auto app available.

Likewise, if you use Android Auto through a touchscreen in your car, be sure to update the vehicle’s firmware as well. Updating your car’s firmware depends on the make and model, but the steps should be easily available on the manufacturer’s support page.

If everything is up to date, but Google Assistant calls still don’t work on Android Auto, try the following:

  1. When using Android Auto, ask Google Assistant to initiate a phone call or touch the “Phone” icon. Don’t do this while driving, clear.
  2. There will be a pop-up window on your Android device (or on your car’s touch screen) asking which app you want to use for the call. Select your phone’s app and tap “Always” when prompted. Make sure to touch “Ever,” and not “Just once” otherwise, you will have to repeat the steps.

It seems like this small adjustment is all you need to do to get Google Assistant calls back to work on Android Auto, but it may not work for everyone. Let us know if adjusting these settings worked for you or if you know of any other fixes.
