It’s been a month since Gary Herritz tested positive for COVID-19 and he’s still feeling the effects.

“My short-term memory is gone. When I’m texting my daughter, I need to scroll up and continue reading what I’ve already told her, to know what we’re talking about, ”he said. “Even today, with this interview, I have a notebook right here.”

It can be much more serious than simply forgetting a word or two.

“Cooking, if you move away from the stove, you can forget that you are doing something. When you add not being able to smell, you don’t know if something is burning, ”said Herritz.

He makes detailed notes and places his medications in the middle of the floor to see them and remember to take them.

The post-COVID brain fog is being studied. But younger, healthier people are more likely to recover, while older people or who have suffered a previous brain injury, such as a stroke, are more likely to have long-term problems.

Those with more severe cases may be at greater risk of suffering permanent problems.

Herritz says that antibody treatment he received it because he is at high risk saved his life. He hopes to persuade others to wear masks, distance himself and get the vaccine.

“It could happen to you. COVID will find you. He found me. I don’t know many people who have been more careful,” he said.
