It all started around 9:30 pm, according to downdetector.com, a website and application monitoring service.
At around 1am on Saturday, it looked like the problem was solved.
“We are investigating reports that some people are having to log in again to access their Facebook accounts,” the company said in a statement. “We believe that this was due to a change in the configuration and we are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The mass logout was quickly followed by user memes, as well as some conspiracy theories.
In a stroke of irony (or genius, depending on your perspective), Facebook posted a follow-up note about the interruption on Twitter.
Then, Facebook, I heard it was a “configuration change”.
It is to the engineers who solved the problem and tried patiently to explain the cause to us, without success. https://t.co/AUARhCZ7W2
