Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry may have affected his candidacy for the Olympic Team after dismantling Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.
Curry had already expressed his interest in playing for the 2020 Olympics, the quadrennial that was rescheduled for 2021. Popovich is set to lead the US team, along with Steve Kerr as his assistant. However, after the Warriors’ 114-91 victory over Spurs, Coach Pop apparently changed his mind.
After Dubs’ victory, Kerr said in his postgame presser that Pop jokingly told him that he was no longer considering Steph for the US Team after embarrassing him.
“He told me after the game that he was considering Steph for the Olympic team, but he said that after the way Steph embarrassed him tonight, he is no longer being considered,” said Kerr while laughing, for ESPN’s Nick Friedell.
Jokes aside, it is not difficult to understand Gregg Popovich’s statement. After all, Stephen Curry exploded by 32 points in an efficient 11 out of 20 shot against Spurs – ending as the only player to score more than 20 in the game. The Warriors superstar also recorded four rebounds and two assists to help Golden State lead by up to 24 points at one point.
The Spurs’ most recent performance is in stark contrast to the previous fight against the Warriors, who saw them win the W, 105-100. While Curry also scored 32 in that match, Pop and Co. were able to respond offensively behind DeMar DeRozan and Dejounte Murray.
For what it’s worth, the pop coach may want to reconsider Steph for the US team at the Olympics, as the All-Star sniper is clearly having one of the best seasons of his career from an individual point of view, for Kerr.
