Daniel Jones and Kenny Golladay have already made a connection.
Not in the field, of course. This comes later. This was a greeting, Jones reaching his new target, Golladay, after the Giants signed a $ 72 million four-year deal with the big receiver on Saturday.
“He just said how good a player he thought I was, ” said Golladay. “I pretty much said the same thing about him. He also said that we are trying to do something great here. That’s what I do. ”
The Giants have done nothing good in Jones’ two seasons. Golladay could help to change that. At 1.80 m, he could be the number 1 threat that Jones lacked, a legitimate weapon on the outside, capable of making plays on the field and catching in traffic. Golladay’s strength, going to the field, and Jones’ best attribute, throwing him to the field, should form a rewarding combination.
“I’m really excited to have Kenny,” said Jones. “He’s been a great player in the league. When we talked, he was interested in the culture we have in the construction and in the team mentality. I think he heard it from the coaches, but he wanted to know how we saw it as players and how much we believe in it. I think finding the right fit was important to him. ”
After four years of having the ball thrown at him by Fort Matt Stafford with the Lions, Golladay, 27, now has a new defender to enter. Jones will turn 24 next month and perhaps Golladay can help with a maturation process in need of a quantum step forward.
“First of all, he is still kind of new to the league and I kind of want to grow with him,” said Golladay. “I am still growing as a player and I feel that he and I can do good things. We have not yet entered the field of practice, but he and I are very excited. ”
Golladay has two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his four NFL seasons and averages 16.8 yards per catch. He said he liked what he heard about offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s attack, but, of course, doesn’t know much about how it will be used in an attack that averaged just 17.5 points per game in 2020.
“As far as I’m concerned, this team is going to have a competitor, a guy who is going to come in, work, is going to try to push the other guys and have fun with it,” said Golladay. “I want to have fun while I’m doing this, that’s what I’m doing for. Just an ace, you know? ”
Golladay smiled when asked if he believes it can have an immediate impact.
“We haven’t even stepped into the field of practice yet,” he said. “I know one thing for sure, I will go out and do everything I can to help this crime go. Whenever they need me, I’ll be there to practically make a move. ”
Soon, the Giants will see for themselves what they added to their attack.
“I can’t wait,” said Jones, “to go on the field and work with him.”
