West Virginia defensive back Tykee Smith announced that he was entering the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday night, and that created a buzz among UGA fans.
Why was that? Smith was the award-winning student in West Virginia under the command of quarterback coach Jahmile Addae, who was recently hired by UGA for the same role.
Naturally, this has led to speculation that Smith may want to meet with his former SEC coach.
Smith is a very important business and easily one of the main potential customers on the portal. He was an All-American from the third AP team last year in West Virginia, and was recently ranked as the No. 5 in the general return of DB in college football by the PFF.
From the UGA point of view, defensive backs are undoubtedly the team’s biggest concern after the first NFL defections by Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell and DJ Daniel. After that, promising Tyrique Stevenson was moved abruptly to Miami after the season. However, Bulldogs have depth and talent in defense – they are just young and inexperienced.
Back to Smith: on Twitter, he revealed its news saying: “I would like to thank West Virginia University for giving me the opportunity to practice the sport that I love at a high level … Despite this, I would like to announce that I will be joining the transfer portal. However, West Virginia will always have a special place in my heart. “
There is no evidence that Smith is interested in UGA and vice versa, but this will definitely be a situation to be closely monitored.
Bulldog fans were also thrilled last month when another West Virginia DB decided to move. Dreshun Miller is over choosing Auburn, and it is not known whether there was any interest shown by the UGA.
Smith is a much hotter commodity, after two stellar seasons with Mountaineers.
