NEWS RELEASE
Serious allergic reaction reported after immunization with COVID-19
The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) was informed that a person who received the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday experienced anaphylaxis (a serious allergic reaction) several minutes after taking the vaccine and during post-vaccination observation needed. The patient was treated immediately with an anaphylaxis protocol at the Decatur Morgan Hospital, where the vaccine was administered.
At this point, the patient is stable and appears to be recovering. He received information that the patient had a previous history of anaphylaxis to biological agents and, after risk assessment, wanted to proceed with the vaccine. Anaphylaxis prior to biological products is a precaution, not a contraindication, for the COVID-19 vaccine.
As required by the emergency use authorization (USA), the adverse reaction has been documented and reported to the manufacturer.
On Wednesday at 7 am, providers in Alabama reported that 15,286 doses of the COVID-10 vaccine were administered in the state. Across the country, six people were reported to have anaphylaxis after the COVID-19 vaccine.
This is the only warning that ADPH has received from any allergic reaction in Alabama. ADPH extends your wishes for a quick recovery to the patient, family and everyone involved.
