Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show sparks online memes

Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show has already had an impact on the internet – but perhaps not the kind the singer-songwriter would have expected.

The star’s expensive performance featured a sequence in which he seemed to get lost in a maze similar to a maze of lights and dancers in the stands of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Although the timing was probably part of the show’s stratagem and The Weeknd was probably not lost – he found his way to perform on the football field, after all – it didn’t take long for viewers to be inspired to throw jokes about the performance.

“I, 6 years old, looking for my mother after I lost her at the mall”, wrote a Twitter user alongside a video of The Weeknd frantically looking around as he runs through the maze.

Playing with the slow release of the COVID-19 vaccine, other added: “I’m trying to find a vaccine site with extra injections about to go to waste.”

“When everyone is tweeting a version of a meme and you try to find out what the reference is”, played one more.

The overall performance left viewers discouraged, especially considering the very high expectations brought about by the lack of publicity by sponsor Pepsi and by The Weeknd’s own financial contribution.

“That was terrible. I mean, the sound mix, the choreography, the concept, the masks … ridiculously bad #HalfTimeShow,” another wrote.

“Probably the worst and most boring #HalfTimeShow so far … where’s my #ladygaga or #Shakira?” someone else asked, referring to the two previous Halftime Show artists.

“I think #TheWeeknd is such a creative artist, but it wasn’t that yawning guy #HalfTimeShow,” a viewer wrote.

“I love @theweeknd, but it could have been better. Your music choice was great, but overall, for a break show, IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER,” wrote another.
