Week 16 NFL choices: Raiders defeated Dolphins, Colts defeated Steelers, Washington seems to end NFC East

Normally, I would put my choices in this week’s insider notebook. But with the holiday and, frankly, the time it took to produce Thursday’s article on how the Rams are building their team, you will have the choices alone here.

I followed consecutive weeks of 11 wins with two consecutive weeks of 12 wins after making 12-4 in Week 15. My one-year record in direct picks is now 150-72-1.

For the choices!

Dolphins in Raiders

Saturday, 8:15 pm, NFL Network

Most recent odds:

Las Vegas Raiders +3

Hard to believe that the only thing between Las Vegas and a five-game losing streak is Gregg Williams’ zero blitz, but here we are. I don’t think Raiders are as bad as they’ve been playing recently, and I was encouraged by Marcus Mariota’s game. Raiders desperately need their defense to step up, and I think that small percentage chance of them making it to the playoffs already gives them enough momentum in the turn.

The choice: Raiders

Colts in Steelers

Sunday, 1 pm, CBS

Most recent odds:

Pittsburgh Steelers +1.5

Pittsburgh disappointed me last week. This should be the right game for the Steelers. They did their best to set up a running game against Bengals and got there halfway, but I fear that any steps they took last week will not appear against DeForest Buckner this week. Philip Rivers, however, is playing a fantastic ball in this scheme.

The choice: Colts

Broncos at Chargers

Sunday, 4:05 pm, CBS

Most recent odds:

Los Angeles Chargers -3

Do I believe in Chargers? No. Do I believe less in Drew Lock? Yes. Lock already had his only good game in December against Carolina. Denver beat the Chargers earlier this year, but that was when they had no idea how to win games played. You must remember that LA went into the fourth quarter with 24-10 and ended the game with Lock dancing on them. Justin Herbert as Offensive debutant of the year.

The choice: Chargers

Panthers in the Soccer Team

Sunday, 4:05 pm, CBS

Most recent odds:

Washington Football Team -1

I am choosing this game believing that it will be Dwayne Haskins at the center of the WFT. This would normally mean that the other team would win. But I think the Panthers understand the value of being in the top five of the NFL’s 2021 draft. Owner David Tepper knows a few things about analysis and knows that if his team wants the QB of the future in the draft, it would be better not to win this game. Washington may close NFC East before Week 17.
