Officer William Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force, died on Friday after the driver crashed into the barricade near the Capitol at around 1 pm last Friday. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Noah Green, collided with the police and the barrier, then got out of the car armed with a knife and attacked another police officer before the policeman shot him, authorities said.

In the chaotic moments after the attack, police initially believed that the suspect, who was seen in the surveillance video attacking the police with a knife, may have stabbed Evans, but that was not the case.

The investigation is ongoing, but there is no indication that Evans was stabbed, cut or shot, said a US Capitol Police official.

Investigators are increasingly focused on Green’s mental health as they work to identify any reason for the attack. Investigators found that the suspect was suffering from delusions, paranoia and suicidal thoughts, according to the officer.
