‘We’ will never guess ‘who is the studio making this game’

A KOTOR remake can finally be on the way.

Several parties have corroborated rumors that the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in production by a surprise developer.

Rumors about the KOTOR remake have been around for years. But this time, the buzz came from an episode of BOB the Podcast with a well-known Star Wars leak Bespin Newsletter (thanks, IGN). According to the Bespin Bulletin, a new KOTOR is already in development by a mysterious studio.

“I talked to some people and I also found out that Jason Schreier said he is not from EA, and ‘we will never guess’ who the studio is making this game,” said Bespin Bulletin on the podcast.

The Bespin Bulletin referred to a tweet made by Bloomberg games journalist Jason Schreier. In February 2020, Schreier’s sources told him that if a KOTOR remake happened, it wouldn’t be from Electronic Arts.

So, what makes this moment different? Well, Schreier’s 2020 tweet matches perfectly with recent Disney news about the return of Lucasfilm Games. It was recently revealed that Electronic Arts no longer has the exclusive right to produce Star Wars games, a lucrative contract that EA has been enjoying since 2013. It seems that Disney has been thinking about outsourcing game development for some time.

Wushu Studio’s Nate Nadja, which also broke big game rumors in the past, echoed the KOTOR rumor on ResetEra. Furthermore, the moment of this supposed KOTOR revival makes sense.

Star Wars has been very, very busy lately. There are several new Star Wars games already on the way and 11 new programs. The franchise’s writers have been sifting through the enormous treasure trove of content in the expanded universe to find new angles and stories.

And among this expanded universe content, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out as a shining example of how to do it right. The game and its sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, were praised as faithful Star Wars stories that exemplify the best elements of the series, in addition to being a careful deconstruction of the biggest Star Wars tropes.

If the rumors are true, then a new generation of fans can experience the two best games set even longer in a galaxy far, far away.
