WBA temporarily suspends the judge on the outlier scorecard in the fight between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez

The WBA announced on Sunday that it is temporarily suspending Judge Carlos Sucre, pending an assessment, after his scorecard outlier for the bantamweight junior world title unification fight between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

Sucre scored the fight 117-111 for Estrada, who won by split decision. Jesse Reyes scored the fight 115-113 for Gonzalez, and David Sutherland scored 115-113 for Estrada.

“We will temporarily suspend Carlos Sucre, while the Officials Committee evaluates his performance in the Chocolatito-Estrada 2 fight,” says a WBA statement, launched on Twitter. “We are going to give the judge the opportunity to talk about what happened.”

Suspensions after high-profile fights are not unheard of. Most famously, the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Adalaide Byrd for his 118-110 score in favor of Canelo Alvarez in his first fight against Gennadiy Golovkin in September 2017, resulting in a split tie. Byrd quickly returned to judging boxing and MMA just over a month later.
