watchOS 7.4 beta 3 with iPhone mask unlock feature for Apple Watch now available

The third beta version of the developer of the next watchOS 7.4 software update for Apple Watch is now available. IPhone users will especially appreciate this update, as it allows the Apple Watch to replace the Face ID and password when using a face cover.

Here’s how Apple describes the feature in the iPhone’s facial ID and password settings:

The iPhone can use the Apple Watch to unlock when the facial ID detects a suit with a mask. Your Apple Watch should be nearby, on your wrist, unlocked and protected by a password.

In practice, this feature is extremely convenient when you frequently check your iPhone in a public place where masks are needed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, you can check your shopping list on your phone at the supermarket without entering your password a dozen times, if you use an Apple Watch with a password. If you unlock your Apple Watch from your iPhone with a facial ID before wearing the mask, you can skip the step of entering a password on any of the devices.

While the feature is certainly prioritized while the world is working together to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it has practical uses in other situations where your face is partially obscured, such as wearing a helmet or facial cover for professional or cultural purposes.

watchOS 7.4 for Apple Watch is currently in beta. IOS 14.5 for iPhone is required to use the unlock feature. Apple Fitness + also works with AirPlay without live metrics such as heart rate and activity data with the upcoming watchOS and iOS versions. Both software updates are likely to be available later this month or early next month.
