Did you put Katy Perry singing your hit 2010 single “Firework” in front of the Washington Monument on your 2021 bingo card? If so, cross out a box because that is exactly how the primetime opening event Celebrating America hosted by Tom Hanks ended. Dressed all in white, the american idol judge cast in an orchestral interpretation of “Swish Swish” “Fireworks,” while President Biden and Dr. Biden watched from the White House balcony and Vice President Harris and second gentleman Emhoff watched from the Lincoln Memorial. Perry’s performance was truly explosive, with a huge display of fireworks starting in the middle of the song and continuing well after it ended. With such a huge fireworks budget, the White House certainly has some money to send some stimmys right? In any case, Perry’s version of “Firework”, a song that came out more than a decade ago, ended the festivities with a literal bang and served as a reminder that 2021 is actually 2012 if you just rearrange the numbers.
