Watch Gordon Murray make his first trip on a T.50 prototype

Just over six months ago, Gordon Murray debuted the T.50 supercar, his successor to the mighty McLaren F1. Surprisingly, the first engineering cars are being tested, and Murray has just made his first attempt at a suitable T.50 prototype on the Top Gear test track, near Gordon Murray Automotive headquarters.

The 3.9-liter Cosworth V-12 in the T.50 Experimental Prototype 2 (XP2) is limited to just 3,000 rpm – quite shy of its 12,100 rpm red line, so Murray isn’t exactly forcing it. Still, he says in the video that he managed to make the tires chirp by making a quick click on the accelerator. And even with the engine just turning above idle, it looks cool. Imagine what it will sound like when it’s spinning four times higher.

“The XP2 prototype is currently running at considerably less revs than its 12,100 rpm limit, but the T.50 was fantastic in my first direction,” said Murray in a statement. “The car was responsive, responsive and rewarding to drive. It was a fantastic experience to be sitting in the center of the car once again with great visibility all the way around and I can see how much the owners will enjoy this experience.

“Obviously, there are still many kilometers of development to be completed and many more prototypes to be built. But the development path of the T.50 is where we want it to be.”

GMA plans to start production of T.50 next January, with deliveries to customers not long after. Only 100 will be built, in addition to 25 copies of the T.50S Niki Lauda race car. We look forward to seeing more T.50s on the go.
