Watch Golden Globe nominations: live stream announcement

With the 2021 Golden Globe approaching, nominations will be announced this Wednesday at 5:35 am PT / 8:35 am ET. The announcement will be broadcast live on the official Golden Globe website.

Former Golden Globe winners Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson will reveal the nominees live on “Today”. The first 12 categories will be transmitted simultaneously by “E! Notícias ”, which will also promote the other categories of E! Online and E! Digital news platforms, including YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

The ceremony usually takes place on the first Sunday of the calendar year, but the COVID-19 pandemic required that the Golden Globe be pushed to a later date. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the move last June after Oscar was postponed to April 25. It also extended its eligibility period for films to February 28, although the eligibility period for television shows remained unchanged and limited on December 31, 2020.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed theaters, there was no shortage of busy movies throughout the year. Launched at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Promising young woman” was acclaimed without being attached to a streamer. On the other hand, Netflix launched a plethora of award-winning competitors, including “The Trial of Chicago 7”, “Mank”, “Midnight Sky” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. Variety’s Clayton Davis predicts that these could be among the best director nominations on Wednesday.

“One Night in Miami” can have several nominations, even in a single category. Variety anticipates that Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kingsley Ben-Adir will be named as the best supporting actor. The two faced each other ideologically as Sam Cooke and Malcolm X, respectively, in the film directed by Regina King. Variety also expects nominations in this category for Daniel Kaluuya as Black Panther President Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, Chadwick Boseman in “Da 5 Bloods” and Bill Murray in “On the Rocks”.

“This category can take a very different form than it could end up happening with the Academy,” noted Davis. “HFPA has had trouble in the past to build consensus around a large group.”

The Golden Globe will take place on February 28 at 5 pm Pacific time, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, broadcasting on NBC. Celebrating its 78th year, the virtual event will be presented by the comedy duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The Golden Globes are voted by HFPA, which is made up of around 90 international journalists.
