The annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display over the Mississippi River was canceled this year, but the sky was certainly not dark.
In fact, the sky over New Orleans may have been even brighter when people created their own canvases.
An incredible video posted on social media showed the city’s skyline exploding with fireworks. The video clip, taken from an 8th floor condominium, rotates from west to east as dozens of fireworks are fired into the sky.
James Flynn, who captured the impressive video, said he had not seen a screen like that since 2005.
“The video was made at midnight on the 8th floor of the Marseille condominium building by the lake at the north end of the city facing south,” Flynn told NOLA.com. “The only comparable demonstration was in 2005 by the population that managed to return to the city after Katrina. Local fireworks vendors said before the holiday that sales have been very good. Several long-standing vendors rated July 4, 2020 as the best of all.
“Everyone was stuck inside the house for months,” said Big Top Fireworks manager Tammy Pearson of the demand. “I’m seeing similar trends” for the New Year.
Some local stores said they doubled their inventory before the New Year’s holiday.
