All signs pointed to Marty Hurney becoming the new general manager of the Washington Football Team. The reports indicated that Martin Mayhew, vice president of the San Francisco 49ers’ gambling team, joined him as a “senior executive with a title to be determined”. Instead, John Keim of ESPN is reporting that Mayhew will have the title of general manager.

What will be Hurney’s title? In fact, he is the one who will have a senior role in the Washington front office, not Mayhew.

This means that General Manager John Lynch and the company will receive another compensatory choice from the third round as part of the NFL minority hiring program, giving 49ers additional selection on each of the next three projects. San Francisco was already set to receive a choice in the third round in each of the next two drafts, after the New York Jets hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as head coach.

Mayhew has experience as general manager. He served on paper with the 2008-15 Detroit Lions, and his teams made it to the playoffs twice during that time. Mayhew also served in other executive roles at Lions and the New York Giants.

Lynch hired Mayhew in 2017 as a senior personal executive and promoted him to vice president of player personnel in 2019.
