Activision has issued a cease and desist notice for a Call of Duty war zone skill-based matchmaking site (SBMM).
SBMM Warzone – a website that allows players to sift through information about player data and skill-based ranking, as well as view other player statistics, such as win and death rates – has been reported to violate the Activision API terms of use , your copyright, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and GDPR guidelines.
A warning, allegedly from Activision, gives the site until Monday, March 29 to close.
“Activision’s lawyers got in touch and asked us to close sbmmwarzone.com before next Monday,” says a statement on the website. “We have tried to reach them several times to become Partners and keep this site alive. Now is our last chance. We need you!”
Activision’s lawyers got in touch and asked us to close https://t.co/aX094FtqB8. According to your ToS, we cannot use your API. In response, the site is trying to bring its supporters together to help them bring down Activision’s complaint, insisting that since players have to define their profiles to the public and explicitly share their gamertags to access the information, this is not a violation of privacy.
“What are we asking for [Activision], it is just to discuss with us how we can become partners and what we must change to fulfill “, said the owner of the site Eurogamer.
“We are open to changing the brand (changing our name), changing some resources and paying a commission for using its API, but for that, we still have to get in touch.
“Our main goal is to become partners,” he added, “and we still believe that we can reach an agreement with Activision. We don’t want to fight them, we are friendly. If it is not possible, we will have to close down, yes … unfortunately. “
At the time of writing, Activision did not respond to requests for comment from the press.
ICYMI, a recent Call of Duty War Zone Message of the Day suggests that the problem is forming in the southwest corner of Verdansk.
The message simply says “Attention! Corruption is changing. The survivors describe hostile explosions in the southwest. Who – or what – caused the explosions? Arm yourself and follow the trail, for glory (and rewards). Hurry!”
We think it’s almost certain to point to the next Warzone event. It may be the long-awaited and rumored Warzone Nuke Event this will cause Verdansk to be destroyed and replaced with a new map, but the message does not appear to be tilted in that direction. All signs have pointed to Warzone Season 3 starting around April 21st, which means it’s a little early to start the nuclear destruction of Verdansk as well.
