COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP) – A man wanted in connection with a nearly 20-year-old homicide in Georgia was captured Thursday by authorities in South Carolina, officials said.
Alvin Shane Barfield, 47, was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Albert Carter Woolfolk in 2003 in Columbus, Georgia, according to news agencies according to officials.
Columbus police said Woolfork, 45, was seen leaving a bar with three men on July 16, 2003. Woolfork’s mother found him 34 hours later, stabbed to death at his home.
The case was dismissed, but in September, the police announced new leads on the case, including new eyewitness accounts of the night Woolfolk disappeared.
Detective Stuart Carter of Columbus said the new witnesses gave a detailed description of one of the men with Woolfork. The man was described as a well-known billiard player and “heavy drinker with a violent temper”.
An arrest warrant was obtained for Barfield in December and authorities found him in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. Barfield now awaits extradition to Columbus.
It is not clear whether he had a lawyer who would comment on his behalf.
At a news conference on Thursday, police said physical evidence was discovered linking Barfield to the murder. Additional details were not immediately released.
The police asked anyone with information about Barfield or the other two men with Woolfork on the night of his death to contact the department or Carter directly.
