WandaVision spoilers follow for episodes one and two.
WandaVision episode 2 starts with more domestic happiness, after that Bewitched-style debut. Sitting on separate beds, Wanda and Vision are enjoying married life to the extreme when a loud knock (from outside) suddenly interrupts the couple.
Afraid of what the noise might be, Wanda pulls the two beds together to bring her husband closer. The pair soon discover that the sound came only from tree branches hitting their window. But a strange feeling of discomfort ensues, suggesting that not everything can be as it seems in your suburban paradise …
Cue a stunning animated sequence, a bizarre radio broadcast and the best magic show in the world, which adds more mysterious layers to this world in which the two Avengers now live.
And then, as soon as the episode starts to subside, Wanda suddenly becomes pregnant. With no screen trick to speak, the source of this miraculous pregnancy is also a mystery, which unfortunately has to wait when the loud banging noise suddenly returns. This time, however, it is not a tree making so much noise.
Wanda and Vision venture outside to find a stranger coming out of a sewer drain in the middle of the street. The identity of the man in question is not clear because his face is obscured by a large beekeeping mask. Although he turns briefly to the camera, his face is covered in shadows.
Although Wanda does not seem to recognize who he is specifically, his reaction is still hostile, suggesting that he does not belong to this suburban dream landscape that she (possibly) created. With just one thought, time suddenly returns, taking them (and us) back inside, where Wanda and Vision celebrate the news of their pregnancy.
The couple kisses and, when they do, color suddenly explodes everywhere, updating the world of Westview to something that would not seem out of place in The Brady Bunch. But even when the credits start rolling, that cracked radio voice appears again, calling out to Wanda. “Who’s doing this to you, Wanda,” he asks. “Who?” And that mysterious speaker is also not the only one to ask that question.
At the time the ‘beekeeper’ briefly appeared in an earlier trailer, some fans suspected he might be a member of AIM, a criminal organization that wears large overalls of yellow hazardous materials that carry more than just a passing resemblance to the equipment. beekeeping.
However, we can now confirm that this is not the case. Of course, it would not be difficult to bring in AIM given its close association with Hydra (another group that plagued Captain America in the films). But a closer look at the symbol printed on beekeepers’ backs suggests that it actually belongs to another organization.
Last year, WandaVision The set photos confirmed that the SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) would debut at the show, and our first proper glimpse of them now comes courtesy of the beekeeper’s SWORD logo depicted on his back (as seen above, via Comicbook.com) .
So, what exactly is SWORD? In the comics, this space-based intelligence agency deals with extraterrestrial threats to world security. Think about SHIELD, but with more aliens and space stuff.
His MCU debut was brought on a little while ago, at the end of Spider-Man: away from home in one of the film’s post-credit scenes, when Nick Fury can be seen relaxing on a Skrull ship. When he stated it was time to “get back to work”, this may have suggested the origins of a new space counterpart for SHIELD.
If that’s true, then what is SWORD doing suddenly in Westview? Well, we know for sure that something is not right with this suburban landscape … if the comics are anything, it looks like Wanda has suffered a break with reality, probably caused by Vision’s death at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Using her powers, Wanda (probably) reshaped reality to create a better world for her, but unfortunately for Westview, it looks like the entire city has been sucked into her illusion as well.
If so, then that ghostly voice on the other side of the radio broadcast probably belongs to a SWORD agent trying to escape and help Wanda, without realizing that she was the one who started all this confusion.
But who is this beekeeper? If he is actually affiliated with SWORD, then how did he end up in Westview while his colleagues looked out? The most obvious answer is that he found a way to break through Wanda’s defenses, possibly in the now miniaturized SWORD helicopter shown below. Or maybe he just got caught up in Wanda’s initial spell?
Whether this is true or not, it does not explain the beekeeper’s costume. Our guess is that this suit helps to protect you from Wanda’s magic, although, as we have all seen, that did not stop her from sending him back where he came from.
There is also the question of which face is under that mask. While the beekeeper may just be an anonymous agent brought in to look scary, it is also possible that he may end up playing a more important role in the future. Maybe it’s Jimmy Woo under the mask, reprising his role as Randall Park’s Ant Man. Or what if it is someone more sinister? it looks like someone higher up may also be pulling the strings here.
Whoever is under the mask, the bees that accompany it also feed on the surprising amount of floral motifs spread throughout the first two episodes. Did this agent become a beekeeper when he entered Westview? Or is he a puppet of some other entity, someone who is even more powerful than Wanda or SWORD? (Internet rumors currently point to Mephisto or Baron Von Strucker, the Nazi who gave Wanda his powers in the first place.)
We hope the answers will eventually come our way until the end of the first season, or maybe even a second season, if this tip from Marvel producer Kevin Feige is any indication …
