WandaVision: What happened to the Scarlet witch’s accent?

In Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff still spoke with an Eastern European accent, but in WandaVision, his accent is gone. What happened?

Throughout her time in the Marvel cinematic universe, Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, maintained her Eastern European accent. In recent outings, however, it seemed to decline significantly. And now, in the new Disney + series, WandaVision, cannot be heard at all, although in the first episode, Vision blames Wanda’s strange behavior on his Sokovian origin. Is it simply Wanda’s product getting stuck in American sitcoms in a suburban American city or is there something else going on?

Wanda still had his accent in Captain America Civil War, but a few years later in Avengers: Infinity War, your accent has been significantly reduced. At the time, Infinite War directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained why Wanda’s accent could only be heard slightly.

“We intentionally try to remove that accent for a few reasons … one of the most distinctive features that [Wanda] has is her accent, “said Joe Russo.” So if you’re going to try to disguise yourself, hide or not get caught, you’re going to try to limit the warnings that would make it easier for someone to identify you, that would include your accent … show that she was acclimating and hiding. “

Since she is running away in the film, it certainly makes sense for her to try to lose her accent. In addition, Black Widow, who also comes from Eastern Europe, speaks with an American accent and, at the beginning of Civil war, she gives Wanda advice on how to mix. Therefore, given the Black Widow’s espionage history, it is no exaggeration to believe that she may have trained Wanda to lose her accent. And since Wanda has spent a few years in hiding to practice, there is a good chance that she has permanently adapted to speak differently.

However, in WandaVision, your accent has completely disappeared. Since Wanda is living in a world based on old-school American series, it would make sense for her to speak like these characters. In fact, she may be consciously adopting an American accent in an attempt to blend into the suburban environment, just as she and Vision are actively hiding their unusual abilities.

Wanda may also be creating the show world based on his knowledge of American sitcoms. Having grown up in Sokovia, it is possible that she had access to sitcoms as a child and therefore built her ideal image of life with Vision around it. As part of that, she may have made the decision to get rid of her accent using her reality-warping skills so that she could live the perfect suburban sitcom life she envisioned.

Since episodes of WandaVision progress, we can learn more about how the Wanda sitcom world works and get a better idea of what happened to his accent. For now, though, it appears that she learned to suppress most during the flight and now has learned to use an American accent to blend in with the rest of the show’s suburban characters.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn like Agnes. New episodes air on Fridays on Disney +.
