WandaVision Showrunner reveals that some MCU characters were off limits

WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer says some Marvel characters were banned from including Scarlet Witch and Vision MCU Disney +.

WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer says that some characters from Marvel’s cinematic universe were forbidden to include in the program. Phase 4 of the MCU will introduce several new characters, but will also elevate the roles of others that have been around for a while. Wanda Maximoff also known as Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) have been part of the MCU since Phase 2, but WandaVision it is the first time that they are at the forefront of a story.

With only four episodes released to this point, WandaVision has proven to be unlike anything the MCU has done before. The fake / altered reality of the show with the witch and the android couple living together in a comedy-style suburb is extremely different. Meanwhile WandaVision focused on Scarlet Witch and Vision, the show also includes several other characters with MCU stories. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) have returned. The use of other MCU characters favors WandaVisionThe connection to the rest of the shared universe, but that doesn’t mean that any character could have appeared.

In a new interview with Digital Spy, showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked about the creative process of making WandaVision. Schaeffer started with the MCU doing Captain Marvel rewrites and then was hired to write Black Widow. When discussing the development of WandaVision, she was asked whether Marvel gave her full control over which characters to include. Schaeffer said he received a large list of characters available for use.

It is not a free rein. [Marvel has its] bigger ideas and interconnection pieces. So, some characters were suggested to me – a bigger list of characters. With Randall Park and Kat Dennings, I thought: this is an excuse to work with two people that I admire so much, so much. Also, I saw a very clear way for them to fit.

Have complete freedom over which characters can appear in WandaVision or any MCU property is practically impossible at this point. The MCU currently has 25 films and TV shows at various stages of development. In many cases, the films and programs complement each other to help create a larger MCU story. This is the best explanation for why Marvel places some limits on which characters can and cannot be used in a given project. And with several of these projects having overlapping production schedules, there’s also an actor’s real-world logistics that can limit which characters are viable options.

The good news for WandaVision viewers is that Schaeffer is thrilled with the cast she got at the end of the day. The show has already featured five characters from previous MCU properties, but there are still several episodes ahead. Speculations abound that other familiar characters like Ultron, Quicksilver and Doctor Strange will appear before WandaVision ends. In addition, there are many theories about other Marvel characters from the comics that could make their debut, such as Mephisto, Nightmare and Wonder Man. So even if Schaeffer was a little limited in the list of characters at his disposal, it doesn’t seem like WandaVision will have few Marvel favorites.
