WandaVision director Matt Shakman reveals that the Marvel Disney + series already had 10 episodes planned, although it was later reduced to 9.
There was a time when WandaVision had 10 episodes planned instead of nine, according to director Matt Shakman. Marvel’s first Disney + series came to an end last weekend, and what an epic ending it was. WandaVision, which debuted in January, told the story of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame while settling in for an idyllic suburban life. This premise, however sweet, confused many fans, mainly because Vision was still dead and did not fit into a typical Marvel project.
Throughout its 9 episodes, WandaVision gradually unraveled its mysteries, revealing that in her pain, Wanda created a totally new vision that could only exist within the rewritten reality that she had sent to her city. The series also had other surprises up its sleeve, from the revelation of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) to the transformation of Wanda into the Scarlet Witch. With so much going on, WandaVision eight weeks ago (since two episodes fell in one day) passed in a flash. However, there could have been even more portions of the Marvel show.

Shakman just appeared at Kevin Smith’s FatMan Beyond show to discuss the WandaVision finale and pulled the curtain on how the series evolved throughout the production process. According to Shakman, WandaVision it was constantly changing and even, at one point, had 10 episodes planned. However, this later changed for the sake of pace. Shakman said:
“Well, yes, things were constantly changing and being redone. The story was changing, especially many of the things in the real world and the ending. There was a lot of experimentation going on and kind of trying different things. One point had 10 episodes planned and we ended up collapsing some, you know, just to make the pace a little bit better. But yes, they changed constantly and then, of course, when we arrived in Atlanta, the pandemic hit and we ended up having months off, so more changes during the post- production and then ideas came up and few changes would happen as a result.
Some may discuss WandaVision it worked well with nine episodes, but there was definitely interest in a tenth installment. What would it be WandaVision looks like ten episodes? Perhaps more time could have been devoted to the Agatha story (which some found a little hurried), or characters like Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) could have been given a little more time on screen. An extra episode certainly looks attractive, but to keep the momentum going, WandaVision needed to reduce the size. In the end, that may have been the smartest decision.
There were brief rumors suggesting WandaVision would have a secret episode 10, likely to be released this week. Shakman unmasked that, and now, having watched episode 9, it’s safe to say that it really ended the story that was being told, so there’s no need for another one. Of course, the WandaVision finale left some threads hanging for future MCU projects, but in the case of this tale about Wanda and Vision, the book was closed. Still, fans will probably wonder what the tenth episode would look like for a while.
