Wandavision Mercury Reveals Undo X-Men Canon Theory

Evan Peters plays Quicksilver on WandaVision, but episode 6 confirms that this is still the MCU’s Pietro, not the one in Fox’s X-Men films.

Evan Peters is playing Quicksilver on WandaVision, but the events of episode 6 overturned the theory that his appearance as Pietro Maximoff makes Fox’s story X-Men films part of the MCU canon. While WandaVision it was full of surprising twists, the biggest of which came at the end of episode 5. When Wanda answered the door, she was greeted by Evan Peters as Mercury, with Darcy Lewis, who was watching at SWORD’s camp, commenting that he had been “reformulation,” since the character was previously played in Avengers: Age of Ultron by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The arrival of Peters mercury in WandaVision raised several questions, including what it meant for the X-Men films. While the X-Men and the mutants were off limits when Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver made their MCU debut, Disney’s acquisition of Fox means that they are now very much at the table. Along with the multiverse coming into greater focus during Phase 4, then Peters’s appearance in WandaVision it could have been the first step towards introducing the X-Men to the MCU.

At the WandaVision episode 6, a little more light is shed on Pietro coming to Westview. It is confirmed that Wanda was solely responsible for bringing him into his altered reality, even though she was not fully aware of it. In addition, Quicksilver still refers to its Ultron era death, saying: “I was shot like an idiot on the street for no reason, and the next thing I know, I heard you calling me.” Although the memory of Pietro’s events may be a little harsh for Hawkeye, it makes clear that this is supposed to be the same Mercury that has always existed in the MCU, but with some changes to help prevent the triggering of the Scarlet Witch’s trauma, it is even used in the episode to explain why Pietro looks like Evan Peters instead of Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

All of this means that Fox X-Men films are not part of the MCU canon, even within the broader multiverse, and that it has not yet begun to introduce mutants. This is not a bad thing and it makes sense. The idea of Mercury being the same one who died fits in better with the way the series explores Scarlet Witch’s most devastating losses and painful experiences. Much like Vision’s corpse in WandaVision episode 4, Quicksilver appears as his corpse full of bullets in episode 6, drawing parallels between how and why Wanda ended up bringing them back, while stressing that neither is truly “alive” now. In fact, as if to really emphasize the point, the Taylor-Johnson Quicksilver death scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron it is even shown as part of the “previously activated” recap at the beginning of the episode.

Although the configuration of the X-Men is likely to be a factor in Marvel’s Phase 4, more pertinent to WandaVision is exploring Scarlet Witch’s pain and growing instability, which is why she ended up bringing Pietro back. He may not look like he used to, but he is still her brother, and not a completely different person. There is still room for WandaVision to configure the X-Men even more, either from the Fox films, perhaps with a cameo by Magneto, or more likely with new castings. Marvel will certainly want to do what it wants when it comes to mutants, so a new start makes more sense than making existing films a canon.
