WandaVision: Evan Peters returns to Marvel explained by lead editor

WandaVision did the impossible this week, bringing the Evan Peters version of Pietro Maximoff instead of Ultron erais in Wanda’s life.

For those who do not have brains programmed to contain all the small details of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson portrayed Peitro Maximoff, Wanda’s twin brother in Avengers: Age of Ultron. We didn’t see him around because Ultron killed him, but his absence was felt when Wanda sometimes remembers the past she is trying to escape from. WandaVision.

Meanwhile, Taylor-Johnson’s Blast off the costar played Pietro Maximoff, the mutant and son of Magneto, in several X-Men movies. He first appeared in X-men: Days of a forgotten future, although Wanda appeared as a much younger sister, uninvolved in the films.

Now that Disney owns Fox, such a move can be made, but is this the first of the X-Men in the Marvel cinematic universe? Is the Multiverse already cracked? Or is Peters showing up instead of Taylor-Johnson just a fun Easter egg for who knows?

Principal writer Jac Shaeffer brought more context to the decision to bring Evan Peters to WandaVision in a conversation with Marvel.com:

We love the idea of [bringing him back]. And then we thought, how in the world are we going to make this make logical sense? Like, how can we justify that? Because that’s the thing, you can hatch a million great ideas, but to make them land, make them based, make them look organic to the bigger story.

This show is a mental mess, and because it’s working on so many levels, and there are so many notions of what’s real and what’s not, and performance, cast, audience, fandom and all that, we just thought it would be the biggest thrill Evan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We thought like, how are we going to give him that entrance and then take advantage of it and make him crazy? And we had the idea for a long time of the brother’s trope, or the relative, or whoever comes to the city and, like, shake things up with the family – that trope of the sitcom.

We’ve been rooting for it for so long and we didn’t know if it would be possible. It was complicated to make it happen. Evan was always ready for this – like, always, always, always. He is a fan of comics and Marvel. He’s always ready for the strangest option. And he is a pleasure – really a pleasure to work with him.

Everyone was very excited. I think kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] I wanted to make sure there was a reason for that, which made sense. And I hope we did that.

This is certainly not a confirmation that we are seeing the same Fox character X-Men movies. It could just be a wink to the fans, or maybe Feige is satisfied with what this configured, not just bringing up the idea of the long-lost relative sitcom cliché.

Damn it, Marvel Studios! So secret. I think we have to keep watching WandaVision to learn the truth.
