WandaVision confirms the fate of the character Captain Marvel

WandaVision episode 4 spoilers to follow.

We knew that WandaVision was going to play a role in setting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but also had a say in another future MCU film.

The fourth episode of the brilliant Marvel series takes up the events of the previous episode, which saw Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) apparently expelled from Westview after mentioning Ultron.

But the opening of the episode would have been a surprise for all Marvel fans and it also led to the episode confirming the fate of a Captain Marvel character, probably ruling out a return for them in Captain Marvel 2.

Spoilers are ahead, so look away now, if you haven’t seen WandaVision episode four yet.

The dramatic start of the episode revealed that Monica was a victim of Thanos’ Snap and showed her return to the world due to the events of Avengers: Endgame. She reassembled herself in a hospital room where she was waiting by someone’s bed when she was dusted.

It turned out that the person she was with when Snap happened was her mother Maria Rambeau, played in Captain Marvel by Lashana Lynch. However, Maria did not return at the same time as Monica.

Tragically, Monica discovers that although Maria had successful surgery five years ago to beat cancer, he came back after Monica had disappeared and she learned that her mother had died three years ago.

RIP Maria ‘Photon’ Rambeau.

We have at least found that after the events of Captain Marvel, Maria founded SWORD – the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division – which will form an important part of Phase 4 going forward.

However, his death off the screen potentially excludes any Captain Marvel 2 appearance unless it happens before WandaVision on the MCU timeline.

Parris has been confirmed to repeat his role as Monica Rambeau in the sequel, so if Maria is going to get involved, it could be that the sequel occurs before Avengers: Infinity War in the timeline. Perhaps it could be centered on the origins of SWORD and Monica’s early days as an agent working with her mother as director of SWORD.

This seems like a strange setup for Captain Marvel 2 since it wouldn’t allow much development of Monica’s character or Captain Marvel himself. It seems more likely to occur after the events of WandaVision, which would exclude a return from Maria in addition to flashbacks.

For now, we will only have to observe this space while we try to find out what the hell is going on in Westview.

WandaVision airs weekly every Friday in Disney + while Captain Marvel is also available to watch Disney +.
