WandaVision brings back Pietro Maximoff played by Evan Peters

Kevin Feige warned us that the Marvel series on Disney + would have implications for the Marvel cinematic universe. And he kept that promise.

On Friday, the fifth episode of “WandaVision” arrived on the streaming service, bringing with it a huge participation that left viewers with a lot to ponder before episode six arrives next week. The revelation not only has ramifications within the sitcom-based TV show, but for the entire Marvel universe … or should I say multiverse.

Now would be a good time to look away if you haven’t seen the most recent episode of “WandaVision”.

** Spoilers ahead **

The fifth episode, entitled “In a very special episode …”, our disorganized team of FBI agent Jimmy Woo, Dr. Darcy Lewis and Captain Monica Rambeau come closer to understanding the Westview anomaly.

Meanwhile, Vision, still part of the simulation, but now set in the 1980s, is increasingly suspicious of the world around him. The neighbors began to act strangely, their twin children age of their own accord and his wife, Wanda, in trying to dispel their worries, just makes them grow.

As soon as the newly formed husband and wife are ready for a powerful discussion, the doorbell rings. Wanda, confused by this turnaround, replies. In front of the poor man is Pietro Maximoff, but not that Pietro Maximoff.

It is Peter Evans, not Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who appears on the other side of the door. The actor played the mutant Quicksilver in several X-Men films, which until 2019 were owned by 20th Century Fox.

It is suggested that Wanda had not planned to bring his brother to the sitcom simulation. After all, only a few previous scenes Wanda refused to bring his sons’ deceased puppy back from the dead.

“You can fix anything, mom, fix the dead,” one son comments. After refusing, even the nosy neighbor Agnes, who is theoretically pulling at least some of the threads of Wanda’s simulation, asked if she could really do that.

“I’m trying to tell you that there are rules in life,” Wanda explains to her two children. “We cannot just hasten aging because it is convenient and we cannot reverse death, no matter how sad it makes us. Some things are forever.”

This statement raises two questions: Is Vision dead or did Wanda (or someone else) bring him back? And Wanda accidentally brought a different Pietro or someone else?

Both will likely be answered before the credits roll in the final episode in just a few weeks.

The audience already had a glimpse of what happened before the Westview anomaly at the beginning of the episode, when Wanda appeared on a security camera stealing Vision’s body from a secret laboratory. And there are probably still many Easter eggs to be discovered that provide more clues.

Welcome to the multiverse

So, how about this new Pietro?

Before Disney acquired Fox’s entertainment brands in a $ 71 billion deal, the two studios made a deal. Disney could use Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, but could not refer to them being mutants or being Magneto’s children. That is why in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Wanda and Pietro derived their powers from an infinite stone and not genetically.

Attentive viewers must have noticed during Friday’s episode that when Tyler Hayward, the director of SWORD, asked if Wanda had a nickname like some of the other Avengers, it was said that she didn’t. Wanda was never called Scarlet Witch in any of the MCU films.

As for Fox, the studio was allowed to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in its films, as long as it made no reference to the Avengers. In fact, Peters’ mercury is known to Peter and not Pietro.

In the past few months, rumors have circulated when Marvel executives hired some familiar faces to return in future MCU films.

Disney has already confirmed that Jamie Foxx will return as Electro of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, which introduced Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. And Alfred Molina, who played Doctor Octopus during Tobey McGuire’s turn as the famous webslinger, is also confirmed to appear in the film.

Dr. Strange, by Benedict Cumberbatch, should also appear.

There has been speculation that other MCU characters, or even previous Spider-Man versions, will join the cast, but Disney has not confirmed those rumors.

Pietro’s return in the form of Peters signals that Marvel is already on its way to exploring the multiverse. This was sparked during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, when Marvel announced that the Doctor Strange sequel would be called “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.

For those unfamiliar, the Marvel multiverse is just an elegant way of saying a collection of alternative universes. They are of a similar nature to each other, but have slight variations. It is a very popular concept in comics, as it allows writers to reinvent characters and stories for new generations.

With Wanda already confirmed as part of the Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange sequel as part of “Spider-Man 3”, it’s no surprise that Marvel is spreading bread crumbs early. After all, the seeds of the infinite stones appear in “Thor” and “Captain America: the first avenger” long before they were named as such.

Marvel used jewels of the mind, power, reality, soul, space and time over a decade, using them to create new characters and situations that ended up leading to “Avengers: Infinity War” and the highest grossing film of all the times “Avengers Ultimatum.”

The introduction of the multiverse in “WandaVision” works on several levels for Disney. Not only are they setting a path for future MCU movies and programs, the company is also making its streaming television content mandatory. Fans need to watch these shows if they don’t want to miss out on plots or introductions of characters that will be integrated into feature films.

“WandaVision” may have been the first Marvel project to debut since “Spider-Man: Away from Home” in July 2019, but it won’t be the last in 2021. At Disney +, it will be quickly followed by “The Falcon and the Soldier Winter “in March,” Loki “in May and the animated series” What If …? “in the summer.

Theatrically, Marvel is set to debut “Black Widow” on May 7, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on July 9, “Eternals” on November 5 and its co-produced “Spider-Man 3” in December 17th.
