WandaVision’s episode 4, “We Interrupt This Program”, made a subtle reference to Marvel’s House of M event through an “awakening” Easter egg.
A smart Easter egg in WandaVision episode 4 makes explicit reference to the classic House of M story, in which Scarlet Witch creates a false reality. When Scarlet Witch first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she was described as a “miracle“—One of only two beings who were given superhuman powers after being exposed to the Mindstone. Wanda Maximoff was originally described as a telepath and telekinetic, essentially Jean Gray’s version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe of the X-Men.
WandaVision it seems to be reconfiguring that set of powers, revealing that the Scarlet Witch has the power to manipulate reality itself. WandaVision episode 4 saw SWORD’s attempt to find out what’s going on in Westview by studying the broadcasts of WandaVisionsitcom reality. As noted in ComicBook.comin Phase Zero podcast, your case notes about Westview residents include a subtle nod to House of M, a famous comic book in which Scarlet Witch rewrites reality on a planetary scale. The notes are about a man named Abilash Tandon (known as Norm in the world of comedies), who for a moment seemed to resist WandaVisionthe false reality back in episode 3. Specifically, they mention “The vision woke him. “
This term was actually taken from House of M, where a young woman named Layla Miller resists the manipulation of Scarlet Witch’s reality. It has the ability to “awaken” anyone with whom it interacts, removing it from false reality and restoring its knowledge of the world as it should be. This led to some very dark moments, because the Spider-Man experience House of M the timeline was of a world where he was married to Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane Watson; Peter Parker couldn’t help feeling that he had actually committed adultery.
It is interesting to see this term used in relation to WandaVision, specifically because SWORD observes the presence of Visão – without Wanda – was what led to Abilash’s “awakening”. It is possible that he is the fault in Scarlet Witch’s WandaVision reality, and this closeness to others allows them to resist their magic. If so, it’s no surprise that a recent WandaVision the teaser suggested that Vision and Scarlet Witch will eventually oppose; however much she loves him, the sight is Wanda’s greatest threat.
