A huge walrus was seen on the west coast of Ireland on Sunday – the first time the sighting of the creature with prey in the country was confirmed, a report said.
The marine mammal was discovered in the rocks along Valentia Island in Kerry, witnesses told the Irish Independent.
“He came out of the water on the rocks and gave us a show,” said Alan Houlihan to the newspaper.
“At first I thought it was a seal and then we saw the prey,” said Houlihan, who was with his 5-year-old daughter when they saw the walrus.
Marine biologist Kevin Flannery, director of a local aquarium, told the agency that Sunday’s discovery “is the first confirmation of a walrus sighting” in Ireland.
“It’s incredible … It’s something unique, as far as I’m concerned.”
Flannery theorizes that Walrus inadvertently traveled from the Arctic on an iceberg.
“He’s from the Arctic,” Flannery told the newspaper. “I would say that what happened is that he fell asleep on an iceberg and fell asleep and then went too far, in the middle of the Atlantic or somewhere like that in Greenland, possibly.”
