Walmart is about to launch its own Android TV streamer

Android TV, through Google TV, is expected to be a big deal in 2021 and it looks like Walmart is ready to take action. After bringing Android to its accessible tablets, the Walmart Onn brand is now configured to use Android TV to power a streaming stick.

An FCC list identified by @AndroidTV_Rumor gives us a first look at a Walmart branded streaming stick. The new device has a modest design, using only matte black and an HDMI plug with Walmart’s “Onn” brand logo stamped on the top.

The FCC list also reveals some details about this device. When released, this Walmart Onn streaming stick will apparently use Android TV 10 – it is unclear whether it will use Google TV – and will run on a reasonably standard, but low-cost specification package. This includes the Amlogic S805Y chipset. This chip, remarkably, is only capable of 1080p60. This is quite low due to the abundance of 4K, but it probably means that this device is very affordable. As a reference, this is the same chip that powers the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick.

Apparently, the device is certified for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and clearly supports Disney + and HBO Max due to the dedicated shortcut buttons that adorn the remote.

Speaking of remote control, this could be one of the first Android TV devices sold in the United States with Google’s new reference design remotes. We have reported this standardized remote design before, and the G10 model used here is the one optimized for streaming devices like this Walmart Onn device.

Completing what we can see in this list, unfortunately, it looks like this device will use microUSB for power – always a shame.

Walmart devices have passed the FCC before launch a few times in the past, and it is usually a sign that a formal launch is coming. We’ll keep you updated on when this streaming stick hits the market.
