Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is joining the Casa do Rato. Coogler’s Proximity Media has just signed an exclusive five-year television contract with Disney, which will see Coogler develop new television series for Disney + and the company’s other TV divisions. And this business already has a project that will leave people buzzing: a Wakanda The TV series is going to Disney +.
Disney itself announced the deal today, revealing that the company “entered into a five-year general exclusive television deal with writer-director-producer Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, with the directors Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, and Peter Nicks. ”Coogler wrote and directed the blockbuster Disney / Marvel Black Panther, and is set to direct the sequence as well. In addition, Coogler and Proximity are developing a Black Panther Spin-off TV series for Disney + set in the Kingdom of Wakanda. There are not many other details for the show other than that, but that is probably enough to get a lot of people excited.
On the deal, Bob Iger, executive president of The Walt Disney Company, said: “Ryan Coogler is a unique storyteller, whose vision and reach have made him one of the leading filmmakers of his generation. With Black Panther, Ryan brought an innovative story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We are excited to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team. “
Coogler added: “It is an honor to partner with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on the Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid television consumers, we couldn’t be happier to launch our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the incredible studios under Disney’s umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing and building relationships with audiences worldwide through Disney platforms. We are especially excited to take our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios, where we will work together with them on selected MCU programs for Disney +. We are already participating in some projects that we can’t wait to share. “
As you can see in the quote above, Coogler suggests working on multiple The Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, not just the Wakanda series. The deal also allows Proximity to develop television for other divisions of the Company. These are all very good news – my only hope is that Coogler will work on projects outside the Disney / Marvel stratosphere as well. This deal appears to consist entirely of TV projects, so if Coogler wants to go out and make a non-Disney film, that shouldn’t be a problem. Meantime, Black Panther 2 is scheduled to arrive in July 8, 2022.
