Wagoneer jeep mules are still running dressed like lamb trucks [Updated]

The new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer were finally unveiled in production this week, but there are still tests to be done. With deliveries of the new bodywork SUVs in the frame in the second half of 2021, it appears that Stellantis is ending high-altitude racing in Colorado with some familiar test mules.

These prototypes look nothing like the Wagoneer models we know now, and that is certainly on purpose. Reports from the beginning of last year point to these body testers as potential Ram Dakota mules, but there is Jeep DNA under the skin. Mostly, these camouflaged vehicles are testing Wagoneer’s independent rear suspension.

The photos here were taken by Facebook user Wil Derby, who posted the images to a group of local enthusiasts. He is apparently not the only one to see this prototype, as other members reported spying on similar trucks in the Denver metropolitan area. However, as reported by GM Authority last month, the Dakota project was reportedly canceled.

It is not clear whether we will see Ram enter the mid-size pickup truck segment to compete with Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado, but from now on, it seems that is out of the question.

Updated at 2:50 pm ET on 3/12/2021: This story previously stated that these prototypes were potential test mules from Dakota. However, several sources have confirmed that they are in fact Wagoneer prototypes with bodies. The copy was edited to reflect, and The Drive regrets the mistake.
