VW CEO Herbert Diess joins Twitter, trolls Elon Musk

“Hello @Twitter! I’m here to make an impact on @VWGroup, especially on political issues”, Diess tweeted on Wednesday. “And, of course, to get some of their market share, @elonmusk – after all, our ID.3 and e-Tron won the first markets in Europe. Looking forward to productive discussions.”

Volkswagen is the largest automaker in the world, with global sales of 9.3 million vehicles in 2020 – only 2.5% of those sales were electric vehicles.

Although Volkswagen is much higher in sales, Tesla’s market value is almost eight times higher.

Diess joined Twitter in December, but sent his first tweet on Wednesday. In less than 24 hours, the tweet accumulated 4,400 likes and he already had 12,000 followers. It is still a fraction of Musk’s 42.6 million followers, but not bad for the first day.

Musk has so far not publicly responded to Diess’ tweet.

As Diess joins Twitterverso, he can learn a little from Musk’s mistakes on the platform. A handful of Musk’s roughly 13,000 tweets got him in trouble in real life – including a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit that deprived him of his title as Tesla president and a defamation suit he won.

Tesla’s CEO certainly loves to troll other automakers, but he has actually tweeted good things about Diess and VW in the past.

Volkswagen and Audi are starting to challenge Tesla

In September 2019, when someone tweeted a critical story from Diess and Volkswagen to Musk, he replied, “Herbert Diess is doing more than any major automaker to use electricity. The good of the world must come first. For what it’s worth, he has my support. “

And last October, responding to another tweet about Diess, Musk wrote: “Diess is doing his best to move in the right direction, but he is in a difficult position with so many constituents to please. There is no way to make everyone happy.”
