The Florida Department of Health announced 16,875 additional cases of coronavirus on Friday, almost 500 of which in Volusia County, bringing the total across the state to 1,548,067.
On New Year’s Eve, the state reported its biggest single-day increase in cases, with 21,015. The second largest increase occurred on January 7 with 19,816 cases. The third largest increase was 19,530 cases on January 8.
The biggest single-day increase in new cases in Volusia County occurred on January 3 with 588 cases. The second biggest increase was on January 5, with 562 cases. Friday’s 493 new cases make this the third biggest increase in a single day in the county.
Flagler County reported a record number of new daily cases on January 2, at 115. The county had its second largest increase on January 3, at 97.
Florida reported 186 new coronavirus deaths on Friday, bringing the statewide total to 23,799.
Another 370 deaths of non-residents are not included in the total number of the state.
On Thursday, 74,549 people across the state received the COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total number of vaccines administered to 849,317, according to an FDOH report. Of those vaccines administered, 79,552 people received the second dose.
The state’s daily positivity rate, calculated using the total number of people tested for the virus and the total number of people tested positive, was 10.14% on Friday, based on 163,164 tests.
As of Friday, 67,463 Florida residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19.
