Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 45 debuts as a tribute to the history of Hot Hatch

Has it really been 45 years since the quintessential hot hatchback first appeared on the automotive scene? Indeed, and to honor the occasion, Volkswagen presents a special 2021 Golf GTI edition called Clubsport 45.

This is probably not a surprise, since the images of the rocket leaked just a few days ago. We now have VW’s full disclosure on all the details, and as the name suggests, this new version is based on the hottest GTI Clubsport. This means that a 296 horsepower (221 kilowatt) version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine is under the hood, driving the front wheels exclusively through a seven-speed DCT. It also has the front axle locking differential and the updated Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which helps to accelerate Clubsport to 60 mph in less than six seconds.

As for the special Clubsport 45, it is mainly a Clubsport upgrade just for the looks. We say principally because VW adds an exclusive Race package that includes a sports exhaust system. The Clubsport’s 250 km / h speed limiter has also been removed, although VW does not say at what speed the 45 will go full throttle. The Race package also includes special 19-inch Scottsdale wheels, finished in glossy black with finished in red at the rim.

The exterior naturally wears GTI Clubsport leather. Enhancements to the Clubsport 45 include a black roof and a rear spoiler that VW says is a tribute to the black-framed rear window of the original 1976 GTI. Prominent stripes with 45 ornaments are found on the side sills, with 45 also added to the rear door. At the beginning you will find IQ.Light LED array headlights; moving inwards, you will find a classic GTI insignia with the letters GTI on the front seat backrests. Another instance of 45 appears at the base of the steering wheel.

Pre-sales for Clubsport 45 will begin in some European countries from 1 March. Prices start at € 47,790 euros, but if you’re wondering how much this is in American currency, don’t worry. Clubsport shows no signs of reaching the United States coast, and a VW spokesman said Motor1.com that there are no plans to send Clubsport 45 across the lake.
