Vikings won’t bring Marwan Maalouf back in 2021

While the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator may or may not be back in the team in 2021, we did get a much more definitive answer about the special team coordinator.

On Tuesday morning, the Vikings announced that the special team coordinator Marwan Maalouf’s contract could expire and would not be renewed.

The Vikings brought Maalouf as coordinator of special teams at the beginning of the 2019 season to replace the late Mike Priefer. The special teams of the Vikings in 2020 were, in a word, horrible. Dan Bailey established new career losses in both the field goal percentage and the extra points percentage, and the Vikings also had the lowest league average in punt returns. Obviously, all of these things cannot be put on a person’s shoulders, but as the person who oversees most of the processes involved, Maalouf was the easiest target.

This means that the Vikings will potentially be looking for new coordinators in two of the three phases of the game next season.
