Vigils continue, business closes on Friday while Andrea rested

Vigils continue to be held across the country in protest against the brutal deaths of Andrea Bharatt, Ashanti Riley and other women who died due to the violence.

Several groups have planned vigils at various locations on Thursday and Friday, while some companies have indicated closing on Friday, when Bharatt will be buried.

A march from Queen’s Park Savannah to Red House is planned for Friday, while another online event called on workers to stay at home in protest.

A list of events scheduled for this week was shared online as follows:

Other vigils were held in Trinidad earlier this week, including Sangre Grande, Arima, Claxton Bay, Princes Town and other parts of the country.

Several companies have issued notices that they will be closed on Friday, including Tropical Express, Auto 8 Car Care Center, Starlite Drugs, Diptee’s Hardware, K’s Cute Collections, Football Planet, Doorway to Learning Ltd. and others. A councilor also posted that more than 300 companies were hired.

Bharatt’s body was found six days after she was abducted on January 29. His body was found at the bottom of a cliff at Aripo Heights. After the discovery, authorities found three sets of remains that are being tested to determine whether they are human.

Two suspects, Andrew Morris and Joel Belcon, who were detained for questioning in connection with his death, died in the hospital. Autopsies revealed that they were beaten to death.

Another suspect should be charged with his murder.

The Police Complaints Authority has since initiated investigations into the deaths of Morris and Belcon.
