Videos show southerners boating, ice skating and snowboarding in the streets amid a rare winter storm

While millions of Americans were hit by a rare winter storm in the South – bringing ice, snow, sub-zero temperatures and power outages – some went to their neighborhoods to participate in winter activities not commonly seen in the region.

A video from northern Texas shows resident Chris Burkhalter putting on his ice skates and gliding smoothly across the ice formed in the streets of his neighborhood.

Another resident, in New Braunfels, Texas, captured himself playing with the fluffy snow that floated in the air

In San Antonio, Texas, resident Denise Forestier shared a video of his daughter shooting at hoops with the falling snow, sliding from side to side of the court in the fallen flakes.

And in Little Rock, Arkansas, resident Owen Stephens shared a video on Twitter showing the thrill of being able to snowboard for the first time in over 10 years. This time, he managed to do it on the streets of his own neighborhood.

Brittney Cunningham in Sterlington, Louisiana, captured the use of her airboat to navigate the snow-covered streets.

Although some managed to make the most of the storm, it had dangerous consequences for others. The deadly storm it hit the South and the heart, leaving millions without power in Texas early Tuesday and generating a possible tornado that killed at least three people in North Carolina.

More freezing and dangerous travel conditions are expected in the coming days. The icy Arctic air and the dangerous wind chills were forecast in the Great Plains and the Mississippi Valley by mid-week, the National Weather Service said.

At least 25 people have died from weather-related causes so far since Thursday, most of them in Texas.
