Absence of So you think you can dance? Saturday Night Live has a timely alternative to Fox’s reality show.
The series of sketches at dawn opened this weekend’s episode with So you think you can get the vaccine, presented by Dr. Anthony Fauci of Kate McKinnon. In an attempt to eliminate confusion over the launch of the coronavirus vaccine, the game show parody gave five ordinary Americans (and an extremely unpopular senator) a chance to run for eligibility.
To help determine the winner, Biden’s chief medical consultant introduced a panel of well-known governors: Gavin Newsom of California (Alex Moffatt), Andrew Cuomo of New York (Pete Davidson) and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan (Cecily Strong). Asked how the Golden State is enduring a year after the pandemic began, Newsom replied, “White teeth, rigid bodies, very bad COVID.”
Among the eager contestants were a Michigander who voted for Whitmer to be kidnapped; a young woman so eager to find her mysterious man that she came (badly) disguised as an elderly citizen to deceive the judges; and Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant), newcomer to CPAC. In an effort to win over the governors, the Texas senator tried his hand at stand-up comedy.
“I’m sorry if my arms are tired,” he said. “I just got back from Cancún, Mexico … Can you really blame a brother for wanting a little sun?”
In the end, the judges made a unanimous decision: The single dose would go to the elderly Seymour Foreman … as long as he knew how to make an appointment online. If not, well … better luck next time!
SNL continued to thank COVID-19 during the opening monologue. First-time host Nick Jonas joined McKinnon, Strong, Kenan Thompson and Beck Bennett for a melodious greeting to Broadway, New York and everyone affected during the pandemic.
