BALTIMORE (WJZ) – A video released by the Baltimore Police Department on Friday shows the terrible rescue of a woman and child from Inner Harbor last month.
Southern District officers were called to the waterline just behind MedStar Harbor Hospital on December 13 in Block 3,000 on Hanover Street for a suicide attempt.
When they arrived, the police discovered that a 35-year-old woman in crisis was trying to drown and her 6-year-old daughter.
“She was really holding her daughter underwater,” Det. Donny Moses said. “She was distressed, she was crying, she was frantic and, at that time, our policemen knew they needed to act quickly.”
The video shows policemen jumping into the cold port and removing the woman and the girl from the icy waters.
“They got the girl out of the water first. When they did, she didn’t answer, she wasn’t breathing, she was lifeless, ”said Moses.
The police took the unconscious and unresponsive girl to a local hospital in her own patrol car. The doctors were able to save his life.
The mother was also transported to a local hospital, where she received medical treatment and an evaluation.
“(It was) very heroic,” said Moses. “Of course, when we are called to calls like this, you don’t think about doing anything extraordinary, but looking back, what these policemen did was extraordinary.”
Police are also praising passers-by who called the incident.
