An unbalanced man was caught on a police video camera giving a vile and racist speech against an Asian American detective from the NYPD during a protest in Manhattan.
The officer, a 16-year veteran of the force, was assigned to a march near the Stonewall Inn on March 11, when a protester approached him and began spitting anti-Asian slanders, according to sources with knowledge of the incident.
“Suck dk, py from a dog. Then cook and eat in front of your mother, ”says the man to the policeman, according to the Post’s footage of the shocking incident.
He continues, telling the policeman to “have a damn tea party” before repeating the word “soy sauce” with a mocking accent.
The scoundrel ends his hateful speech by asking the policeman if he would put him on the “special lunch”.
Sources said that racist verbal attacks on minority police officers like this “fired” since last summer, when the city was shaken by protests against racism and police brutality.
The police officer targeted in this incident considered making a complaint, but reconsidered, believing that the harassment may not have reached the level of a hate crime, according to sources.
It comes amid a wave of attacks against people of Asian descent in the Big Apple and across the country.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said last week that police officers should “confront” people accused of “offensive” behavior – even if the behavior does not reach the level of crime.
Asked whether the NYPD and the city could be doing more to prevent the worrying increase in hate crimes against Asians, de Blasio suggested that the warnings could be a last resort.
Sources said the man who triggered the speech is known to the police for having already been arrested on charges of making terrorist threats and aggravated harassment.
Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, told The Post that the incident was “disgusting and despicable” – but also “not surprising”.
“This is the sad reality that the police have to deal with and irresponsible politicians have invited,” said the union leader.
The detective involved “deserves great praise for his calm reaction,” added DiGiacomo.
