Veteran joins Jalen Hurts in Eagles quarterbacks’ room

The Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of quarterback Joe Flacco on Tuesday night. What has not been revealed is whether he is in Philadelphia to provide a veteran mentor for Jalen Hurts or as part of a quarterback competition with the former Alabama alumnus.

Prior to Flacco’s hiring, the only defender hired from Philadelphia for the 2021 season was the Hurts, after the Eagles left Carson Wentz for the Indianapolis Colts.

Wentz was in his fifth season as a Philadelphia defender when the Eagles put him on the bench to play Hurts in the last four games of the 2020 season.

Flacco joined Philadelphia for a $ 3.5 million one-year contract, which could reach $ 7.5 million if Flacco reaches the business incentives, the NFL Network reported.

Once the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, Flacco has played 13 seasons in the league. He spent the top 10 as Baltimore’s starting QB and won the MVP Award at Super Bowl XLVII, in which the Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 on February 3, 2013.

When an injured hip left Flacco aside in the tenth game of the 2018 season, Lamar Jackson joined as a Baltimore defender, and the Ravens kept him in charge.

Flacco started the first eight games of the 2019 season for the Denver Broncos before losing the rest of the season to a neck injury.

In 2020, Flacco played five games, with four games, while backing up Sam Darnold with the New York Jets.

In 176 NFL regular season games, Flacco completed 3,744 of 6,066 passes for 40,931 yards with 224 touchdowns and 144 interceptions. Flacco also played 15 games in the postseason, with 25 touchdown passes, 10 interceptions and a 10-5 record.

Hurts joined Philadelphia in the second round of the NFL’s Draft 2020. In his debut season, Hurts played 15 games, with four matches. He completed 77 of 148 passes for 1,061 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for 354 yards and three touchdowns on 63 loads and received a 3-yard pass.

A report earlier this month indicated that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie did not want the team to play for the Hurts, but he preferred that Philadelphia build around the quarterback for the 2021 season.
