Veteran DT Sheldon Rankins, Jets agrees to a $ 17 million two-year contract

Veteran defensive striker Sheldon Rankins and the New York Jets agreed on a two-year, $ 17 million deal on Sunday, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network.

Rankins spent the first five seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints after being selected in 12th place overall in 2016.

The 26-year-old recorded 1.5 sacks, 20 tackles, three tackles for a loss and nine defender hits in 2020. He started all 16 games in 2017 and 2018, but has not been a real starter since.

New Orleans lost several players this offseason while trying to reach below the salary cap, including Janoris Jenkins, Kwon Alexander and Jared Cook. Not to mention that quarterback star Drew Brees has retired.

The Jets, on the other hand, remain aggressive before the 2021 draft. Gang Green added Carl Lawson, Lamarcus Joyner and Jarrad Davis in defense.
