Versatility key for depth, Gamecocks development

The more the better, this is Shane BeamerCross-training approach, going to his first spring training as head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Players who can help in various areas of their position group add value to a team. Offensive tackles that can kick in to guard. Cornerbacks with the ability to assist in nickel or security.

And it’s not just limited to attack or defense.

“The more you can do, the better,” said Beamer. “We talk about it on special teams as well. You can be the left guard on the punt team, but you better know how to be the left defender and the right guard on the punt team too, because the more you can do, the more reliable you are, the better. And this is no different in any other position. “

At some point, however, players need to focus on keeping you pressed at a certain point. Beamer still wants Gamecocks to start figuring out what they do well.

“We have to make sure that we do a good job also of not moving the guys and asking a defender to play five different points in the defense or what not,” Beamer said. “They need to be really good in their positions, but we certainly have to have the flexibility to put people in different places, whether it’s offensive people and where our guys are lining up, based on their skill set. Or the offensive line, the guys being able to swing and play in different locations. “

Regardless of the situation or circumstance, Beamer wants to have his 11 best players on the field.

“At the end of the day, we want to put our best players on the pitch and a lot of that will be due to the flexibility they have to move around,” he said.
